Firearm Injury Prevention
What we do and why we do it:
At the Yale School of Public Health, our firearm injury prevention (FIP) work uses the tools of public health to frame solutions.
Mission
To reduce firearm injury and its ripple effects through a comprehensive, community-rooted public health approach.
Vision
The Firearm Injury Prevention Center will serve as an interdisciplinary hub of scholarship and practice in applying a public health and safety lens to firearm injury and related violence.
We will combine rigorous research, creative communication, and strong external partnerships – along with a deep grounding in community experience - to shift how the nation understands, responds to, and prevents the uniquely American epidemic of gun violence.
Approaching Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue
Former President Peter Salovey and YSPH Dean Megan Ranney discuss a public health approach to the gun violence epidemic in the Yale Talk Podcast Ep 39.
Starting initiatives of our work include:
- “Research With”
The Yale School of Public Health recognizes historic, systemic and structural barriers in research that have resulted in exploitative and transactional relationships with communities. FIP at YSPH commits to a process of inquiry and change by engaging in research with communities (as opposed to research on) through:
- Careful examination of partnerships
- Centering community voice
- Sharing resources and results
- Extended Learning Opportunities
The Yale School of Public Health’s Firearm Injury Program offers low and no-cost in-person and online learning opportunities for community members. Coming soon!
